Owners

We’re Don and darci Beacom, founders and owners of CedarSchemes. With over 30 years of woodworking experience, Don has loved working with wood making cabinets,  garden planters and raised beds for our family and friends. What started out as a hobby is now our family-owned small business.

Why we build planters

After we moved to our new home in the Seattle area, we began to plan our garden. We wanted well-made, ready to use and affordable cedar planters. Planters that are safe for growing herbs, vegetables and fruit. We also wanted attractive planters we can use to grow seasonal flowers and ornamental grasses, so we began our search.

Western red cedar is a natural product that lasts and looks great in almost any setting.

Most of the wood planters we found in local stores and garden centers are mass-produced. Most of those planters had staples and small finishing nails. The hardware wasn’t stainless steel, which meant it will rust when used outdoors. The commercially made planters we found were of composite or other types of wood such as pine or fir. We couldn’t tell if the  planters we found were chemically treated or had potentially toxic stains applied, so we kept looking.

Rather than compromise and buy mass-produced planters that may or may not last, or are built with materials that we weren’t sure about, Don decided to make our own planters. He knew he could do a better job by using quality materials and designs that are best suited to the climate and safe for gardening.

People wanted to buy our planters!

Demand for Don’s hand-crafted planters and raised beds grew among friends and family, our first customers. They referred other gardeners they knew who wanted planters with the quality and beauty of Don’s cedar planters. We launched our business, CedarSchemes, to focus exclusively on making hand-crafted cedar planters, containers, garden accessories and raised beds for gardeners, landscape and home decorating enthusiasts.

Based in Washington State, we began operating as CedarSchemes in October, 2015.
